Roof Underlayment Guide

Underlayment is installed beneath the finished roofing material and forms part of the roof’s water-management system.

Underlayment types vary

Traditional felt and synthetic products differ in weight, handling, exposure limits, and manufacturer requirements.

Ice and water protection

Some roofs and climates may require or benefit from self-adhered membranes at specific areas such as eaves, valleys, or penetrations, subject to code and system requirements.

Ask for the product specification

A written estimate should identify the type of underlayment rather than simply stating that underlayment is included.

Compatibility matters

The selected underlayment should be appropriate for the finished roofing material and installation system.
